The Study Of Chen Shouqi’s Academic Thoughts

Chen Shouqi was a famous Confucian during the period of Jiaqing and Daoguang. He was proficient in the study of classics, who was also deeply devoted to the study of the modern“Shang Shu”and“Poem”of three scholars. His lifetime was mainly dedicated to writing and educating with a short period of serving as an officer away from home. Therefore, this thesis is mainly about the research to the academic thoughts of Chen Shouqi from the angles of classic study and academician education.The achievement of Chen Shouqi for classic study can be embodied from the collection of“Shang Shu Da Zhuan”, the comment of“Wu Jing Yi Yi Shu Zheng”and the editing of“Zuo Hai Jing Bian”. The methods of Chen Shouqi to study classics can be summarized into three points. First is to cite with elaborate sources and to be combined with the history of classics. Second is to audit the similarity and difference among different books in order to quote perfect resources. Third is to clearly distinguish the modern classics of different scholars and to carefully examine the classics of both ancient and modern origins. There are two most prominent points of his proposals of studying classics. One is that the study of classics should be focused on West Han dynasty and more emphasis should be laid on the mutual development of new-text and old-text classics. The second is that the distinguishing of the new-text classics from the old-text classics should be conducted through different words and interchangeable characters.When Chen Shouqi had taught in the Aofeng Academy, he held the educational concept that the school should urge the teaching atmosphere and set up the learning style, and it should lay emphasis on classics and history as well as their application. Apart from that, he reformed the admission method, the regular statute and the system of examination and lectures of the academy. He led the students to pay attention to the practical issues of the society. Thus the talented who were trained by him for practical purpose like Zhang Jiliang, Lin Zexu, Lin Changyi and so on.His proposition of doing research and his achievement not only has had great influence on his son Chen Qiaocong, but also has obvious enlightening and promoting effect on the scholars after him like Liao Ping and Pi Xirui.
