By discussing FC renhe‘any’in different linguistic contexts, the thesis aims to get the licensing conditions on FC renhe‘any’.The explorations on FC renhe‘any’generally focus on the comparison between renhe‘any’and other FC wh-s (such as shenme‘what’, na-‘which’) to find out the linguistic contexts for wh-s. The properties of FC renhe‘any’are rarely studied. The previous analyses give little attention to the properties of FC renhe‘any’. The thesis tends to induce the exact properties of FC renhe‘any’to derive its licensing conditions. As for the linguistic contexts and licensing conditions of FCIs, some isolated researches on various languages have been done, for example, accounting for subtrigging effects of FC any with exhaustification, discussing FC any in modal context, claiming that it was the indefiniteness of context that licensed FC any. But they didn’t take linguistic contexts of FCIs into consideration. Except for few descriptions in some traditional books, rare theses have discussed on the linguistic contexts of FC renhe‘any’thoroughly and extensively, let alone its licensing conditions. Therefore, the thesis will bring together all the factors that affect the distributions of FC renhe‘any’.To begin with, the thesis makes comparisons between renhe‘any’and other universal quantifiers such as suoyou‘all’, mei‘every’, FC wh-s and analyzes different situations in negative context to summarize the properties of FC renhe‘any’to explain the licensing conditions. Next, all the linguistic contexts of FC renhe‘any’will be conducted to get its licensing conditions. These linguistic contexts involve modal force, predicate types, object types, the structure of renhe NP‘any NP’, different sentence patterns and syntactic positions. To conclude, it is just an apparent phenomenon that modal force and sub-trigging effects are the licensing conditions. It is genericity of renhe NP‘any NP’and the predicate and the relationships between their genericity that license FC renhe‘any’. Evidences from FCIs in English, Greek and Spanish further testify the hypothesis on the licensing conditions.
