Since the publication of Evolution and Ethics and Other Essays, the Chinese translation academia has studied Yan Fu’s translation from a plenty of perspectives and formed completely different attitudes toward his unorthodox translation methods. This thesis aims to analyze Yan Fu’s translation of Evolution and Ethics and Other Essays from an eco-translatological perspective. The reasons are two-fold:eco-translatology can provide new entry points to study Yan’s version and something should be done to further investigate whether eco-translatology can work as an effective perspective to study translation. With eco-translatology as the theoretical foundation, the thesis explains the unorthodox translation methods in the translation of Evolution and Ethics and Other Essays as well as Yan Fu’s translation standards of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance. Three conclusions are reached that eco-translatology embodies the philosophical concept of "harmony" and provides a new effective perspective for the researchers to interpret Yan Fu’s translation, that adaptation and selection in the translation process are unavoidable and by so doing the translator seeks for harmony and that the concept of "translator-centeredness" explains the status of the translator in the translation process and supports Yan Fu’s subjectivity and discourse power.
