On Kaifeng Pan Drum

KaiFeng Pangu drum, which is a sort of representative traditional folk art activity in KaiFeng city, is well known to Henan people. Evenmore, it is very popular all over the vast land of China.KaiFeng Pangu drum, so called as "Dagu", is usually considered to be one of the "five main drum sets of China".It has distinctive characteristics, huge shape,it is heavy and highligting the male power. It is a type of musical instrument that played in squares to express a grand atmosphere or brilliant sense. The performance of Pangu drum have different functions in our society, and realize its value by committing itself to modern world. Breifly, the topography features and the people’s customs of Kaifeng formed the appearance,actually, Pangu drum’s national spiritual value is the core of this folk art activity.This dissertation discussed from the origin, history, development, performing characteristics,including the useage of Gong, Cha, Command Flat,and some other instruments in Pangu performance. This research summarized the artistic charms, social and cultural functions, and the symbolic meaning of KaiFeng Pangu drum, elaborated the Pangu drum’s primitive beliefs, and its social functions in military, worship,folk ceremony. This study comprehensive used art sociology, cultural anthropology, cultural and ecological theory and folklore research methods. Writer read a lot of the material on Pangu drum set, even went to Kaifeng Conduct in-depth investigations and studies on this project, strived to make this article both practical and theoretical. This dissertation reveals KaiFeng Pangu drum’s heritage significance in the modern world, increases people’s awareness on KaiFeng Pangu drum, and invokes to improve the protection of KaiFeng Pangu drum. More importantly, studying in KaiFeng Pangu drum is an effective way to strengthen the protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and an effective way to highlight the importance of protecting Intangible Cultural Heritage.
