Self-mocking is a kind of verbal humor. It is a popular language phenomenon andhas important function and special effects. It uses language as medium based on aparticular context. By utilizing pun,metaphor, exaggeration,satire, etc. it bringsthe incongruity out and shows up the absurd phenomenon in everyday life,in orderto inspire people to think deeply and obtain its humor effects of art. This paper arguesthat, self–mocking verbal humor is a special kind of successful communication.People achieve humorous feeling because the psychological conversion people felt bydeducing from the "unexpected" to understand the reasoning to the through. It is this"unexpected" and "sensible" make both parties understand the language of fun, self–mocking verbal humor effect then is produced.The first chapter presents the purpose and significance of the research object andsource of corpora, this part also points out the innovations and deficiencies.In the second chapter the author introduced the traditional theory of humor.byinterpreting the concept of humor and category, the author makes a new definition andclassification on the basis of previous research achievements of verbal humor.in orderto make clear the research object of this paper–self-mocking verbal humor. Then itspragmatic functions and social value is analyzed. The chapter also introduced thetraditional three theory study of humor-superiority theory, relief theory and incongruitytheory. And consider incongruity theory is the root causes of humor.From chapter three to the chapter five is the main body of this paper. In the thirdchapter of this paper the author uses presupposition theory, which is an importanttheory in linguistics to explain self-mocking verbal humor. This chapter introducedsemantic presupposition and pragmatics presupposition and the characteristics andchapter four and chapter five adopted presupposition theory in the formation ofself-mocking verbal humor. Through the analysis of the widely collects to corpus, this paper discusses the generating mechanism of self-mocking verbal humor.The author in this thesis makes use of a number of authentic materials of self-mockingverbal humors to discuss the relation between the presupposition and formation ofself-mocking verbal humor. The aspects of psychology, figures of speech etc areexplained in detail, and it sums up the ways of analysis self-mocking verbal humors.Finally, the features of presupposition are also mentioned in the interpretation.The last part of this paper discussed the self-mocking verbal humor for teachingChinese as a foreign language in the application. The author considered thatself-mocking verbal humor draws near the mental distance with students, make theclassroom atmosphere harmonious, and deepen the students’ understanding of thecontent of learning and memory. And because of different cultural background, in theteaching Chinese as a foreign language teachers pay particular attention to the words ofthe cultural proposition produce humor application. Use the append ability to explainthe verbal humor and the place where students don’t know very well. This paper arguesthat, in the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language employ self-mockingverbal humor appropriately may have significant effect.
