Abhyudaya And Pure Land The Study Of Cave9of Mogao Grottoes

Cave9of Mogao grottoes was built during the Gui-yi-jun regime, we can determine the date of the cave’s completion by the donors’inscriptions in the archway, and the date was about898to900AD. The north wall of the cave was painted with the illustration of Vimalakirti sutra which had a small part emphasized on Tibetan people, it can inferred that the main donor of Cave9was closely related to the ex-Tubo’s governing in Dunhuang. The pyramidal ceiling of the cave was painted with illustration of Avatamsaka Sutra and Maitreya Sutra, and Kalavinca in the centre, refer to the works of Zhi yan, the second master of Huayan Zong, we could know that the building thoughts of this cave was on Avatamsaka and Pure Land, and the core idea was abhyudaya, by reciting Amitabha and reading Mahayana sutras, the illustrations painted on the sourth, west and north wall, set reborning in the Western Pure Land as the preliminary practice target, and the ultimate target was to reborn in the Lotus Treasury World.
