Symbolism painting creates a more profound symbolism language. It combined withthe19th century background which featured decadent, gloomy and paly as well asexploration of the changes and development of aesthetic sense. It also opens up newapproaches to symbolistic expression. Symbolism painting opposes the point that therecount and symbolism on the basis of replacement which is shown in the theory ofclassical representation. It advocates exploring new ways of picture symbolism on thebasis of emotion and imagination. Different symbolism painters have their own specialportrayal skills and their works show different characteristics. For this reason, thesymbolism leaves diversified valuable research material for us.By studying the development of the19th century symbolism painting, I divide thesymbolism painting into three stages and analyze the painting features specific to eachstage. Meanwhile, I analyze the Chinese artist works,which has a typical characteristic ofsymbolism，from the new era to the1990and summarize them.I come to these conclusions. Beginning, the Western symbolism painting performancefantasy and poetic, but in the late, they began to explore the essence of the people’s ownproblems, such as thinking and performance on the ultimate question of life, desire, anddeath. The Chinese symbolism paintings combine our unique historical background anddiversified cultural connotation. Not only combine with the traditional image of the ancientChinese, but also has the artist thinking on the ultimate question of life. It has very greatvalue. I hope that this study could be helpful to understand the artistic value of symbolismpaintings and to better represent the symbolism in the practice of painting.
