Comments on novels written in Ming and Qing dynasties of China are like thesparkling starry night, though scattering in bits and pieces, a school is naturallydeveloped, with a set of rules established, in which the theory of “Simplification andimplication in words” is one of them. Though the theory has limit as for scope, it isshining brightly, which is of great value to the author, for it is a theory profound innational culture while inheriting a style of writing in which sublime words with deepmeaning are used and upholding obscurity in meaning, meaning simplifying wordsand encouraging readers to read between the lines. The application of “simplificationand implication in words” creates an art world where concise and comprehensivewords imply profound meaning. The article is based on the technique of “simplification and implication in words”while probing into the appreciation of beauty. The article is divided into four chapters.Chapter one describes the narration technique of “simplification and implication inwords”, which is mainly concerned with functions of such theory as well as plottingof additional description, adjustment in narrative rhythm and saving of description etc.Chapter two is about portrait of characters with the theory, which is mainly associatedwith discussion on achieving the most in writing with the most succinct words.Chapter three is about the language technique of the theory, which focuses on thecontent contained within, describing the ways of conciseness in language and theimplication involved within. Chapter four deals with the aesthetic value of the theory, with an analysis done from the discussion on artistic conception by Jin Shengtan (thegreat critic of theories about ancient Chinese novels) to explain that the novel has toattain a level from nothing to something and the requirements on talents and aestheticthought of author as well as discussing the beauty of nature, flexibility andeuphemism contained in the theory that contribute to the reserved oriental aestheticsin novels belonging to Ming and Qing dynasties.
