In the modern Indian history, Chinese Language teaching dates back to 1937 when NobelLaureate Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore started it in Vishwa Bharti University, Shantiniketan,West Bengal. Since then, Chinese Language courses in India have gone through several ups &downs. However in the recent past Chinese Language courses have gained popularity,due tothe Sino-India relations have come on a good track in recent years.This thesis looks into the problems related to Chinese Language teaching in India as a majorforeign language. The thesis also focuses on the evolution of Chinese Language courses andcurriculum in India and other practical problems it faces as well as dealing with the primaryproblems and make policy for development of Teaching Chinese in India.The thesis is based on the case study of Chinese Language being taught in Doon University,India. The University has been imparting Chinese language education since 2010 as a Bachelorshonours degree course, would be extended to Masters and PhD degree programmes in the nearfuture. Doon University has just been established, and while starting the Chinese LanguageCourses it has taken into account of experienced gained by Chinese Language Teaching in India.The designing and planning of Chinese Language Course has got sustainable help from theexperienced teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Thus Doon University’s Teaching ChineseLanguage can reflect the general problems faced by Teaching Chinese Language in India.This thesis studies the teachers, teaching methods, teaching materials and teaching situationin Doon University. By the means of Questionnaire this Thesis tries to understand the problemsfaced by students while learning Chinese Language and lay the counterplan to solve theseproblems. During implementation of solutions, first we should apply the new teaching materialsand teaching methods, then mobilize the students’interests in learning Chinese language, and tryto boost the efficiency in beneficial way.The study provides an Indian perspective on ongoing Chinese Language education in India.One of the major findings of the study is that Governments on both sides can play a vital role instrengthening Chinese Language education in India. The study also help Government andScholars from both sides understand the finer nuances of Chinese Language education and howboth the countries can benefit. Better understanding of the Language would definitely help inhaving better understanding of each other’s perspectives. Thus, in the long run, both thecountries will be able to address not only their socio-cultural issues but also socio-economicissues. Language barriers can be permanently removed through the spread of ChineseLanguage Education in India.
