Elementary Discussion On The Narrative Time And Narrative Theme Of Foucault Pendulum

Narrative writing is the art of time which is indispensable tonarration. It means no narration to cancel time. Although UmbertoEco is one of the most famous experts in many areas and his novelFoucault Pendulum is always known for the complex and difficultcontent, these don’t change its narrative nature. FoucaultPendulum is analyzed from perspective of narration. The paper isdivided into two parts. In the first part, on the basis of close readingof the text, using narrative theory as our tool, we analyze thestructure of narrative time of the text in both ways which arehorizontal and vertical. We may divide the text into ten differentnarrative time units and five narrative time plates and investigatethe relationship between them. According to the physical time cuesof narration of the text, we try to restore its narration in order toshow its complex plot vein more distinctly. In the second part, onthe base of the what we have known about the narrative time,combining the textual narrative structure, we discuss the narrativethemes of Foucault Pendulum. We think that“Kabbala tree of life”plays the important role in the text, so we can interpret thenarrative theme of the novel from the perspective of the tree of life,which means Foucault Pendulum is also discussing the road of the human self-realization.
