As a pioneer in contemporary Chinese painting, Liu Wenxi always stresses in hisartistic creation the policy of “two essentials” and “two100%”. As inspiring and shocking ashis works always are, he sets the passionate working people in northern Shaanxi as thesubject matter, a true revelation of his commitment to “serving the people, serving thesociety”.Presently, researchers have done a number of studies on Liu Wenxi and loess paintingfrom various aspects, mostly starting with personal achievements of Liu Wenxi as well as theemergence and development of loess painting. By focusing on the colors, this article analyzesthe color characteristics of works by Liu Wenxi.First, this article describes the status of Liu Wenxi in Chinese painting circle as well ashis achievements and representative works on color aspect in his artistic creation. With LoessPeople as the main track, this article introduces in analysis the Foolish Old Man by XuBeihong and The Refugees by Jiang Zhaohe for comparison, together with other works, fullyembodying the distinctive characteristics of painting colors used by Liu Wenxi. Next, thisarticle analyzes the source of color insights as well as the evolution of color, style andrepresentation objects in his artistic creation from the traditional, folk and Westernperspective. He has established his own style in the painting circle of Shaanxi and has exerteda profound impact on contemporary impressionistic painting in China. A conclusion is drawnthat, he inherits the traditional Chinese painting colors and selectively integrates withWestern concept of colors to enrich manifestation of colors in painting and further break withtraditions, which allows the development of Chinese painting to take on different styles andgreatly promotes the blossom of Chinese impressionistic painting.
