As a prominent means of international communication and cooperation, interpretingplays a more and more important part in the world, and has become an indispensablemethod and medium to exchange message and thoughts for two sides that do not know eachother’s language. As an interlingual and cross-cultural language performance, interpretingis fulfilled by three sides, namely, a speaker, an interpreter and audience. An interpreter isthe essential bridge builder of bilateral feedback system. As an important medium of verbalcommunication, an interpreter gets the massage mainly in the form of listening, and thelistening level of an interpreter is the foundation of successful interpreting.Listening comprehension in English-Chinese oral interpretation is influenced by manyfactors, such as the length of sentence, speaking speed, pronunciation and vocabulary aswell as some objective environmental factors. Among these factors, obviously too manylong sentences in the speech become an important element exerting a deep influence in thisregard. There are many long-sentence types in English, which certainly make the exchangeof message complicated. They also bring difficulties and barriers to interpreters in theirunderstanding and analyzing the deep meaning of the source language. Therefore, it isnecessary for interpreters to master the long-sentence listening comprehension skills.In the previous interpreting study, few researches have been done from the angle oflong-sentence listening comprehension. Most researchers put forward some proposals todeal with this problem from the respect of translation or listening comprehension. In thisthesis, special analysis is made on the long-sentence listening comprehension inEnglish-Chinese interpretation, and then some feasible and efficient countermeasures arepresented. Considering that oral interpretation is a practical process, this research intends tofind problems and seek solutions in interpreting practice. An experiment of long-sentencelistening comprehension is made and relevant data are collected. According to the datacollection and analysis, the author tries to find out the relationships between long-sentencelistening comprehension and interpreting, as well as the difficulties in long-sentencelistening comprehension. Finally, some feasible and efficient countermeasures are offered to eliminate the barrier of long-sentence listening comprehension.The main significance of this research is to find the long-sentence listeningcomprehension difficulties and feasible countermeasures. The research mainly aims to helpinterpreters to improve their levels of long-sentence listening comprehension and makeefforts to reduce or even eliminate the barriers in listening process. In this way, the processof oral interpretation can become smooth. Furthermore, it is hoped that this present studycan throw some light on future researches in this field.
