This article regards the works written by John Galsworthy, who is a celebratedBritish realistic writer, as the research subjects, analyzes his group image Forsyte, andthen emerges the realistic critical spirit in Galsworthy’s works. There is a group ofspecial images in Galsworthy’s series of three novels Forsyte Saga and his shortstories The Apple Tree, The first and the Last, and Garth Fossett off hard, theseimages are selfish, callous and mercenary, they are the Forsytes, who can berepresented by Soames in “The Man of Property”. First of all, this article organizesand analyzes the background of reality, the origins of theory, and the directions ofconsciousness when Galsworthy created such images, indicates that the socialhistorical reality in Britain during the late19thand the early20thcentury is the soil tocultivate the Forsytes, while the critical tradition of realism is the cultural foundationof Galsworthy’s authoring. Building the images by taunt and satire, Galsworthyreveals his desire and pursuit for the genuine emotions, such as beauty and goodness,by a series of images who are opposite of the Forsytes. Not only that, this article willuse the theories by Erich Fromm, who is the representative figure of Frankfort School,in order to analyze the values of money, affection and the character mechanism, andalso to interpret Galsworthy’s callous repudiation to alienated humanity in the reifiedcapitalist society.
