Under the background of structural reform of national culture, how shall we reinforce external culture transmission and elevate China’s image in the new period has become an urgent matter. As an important window of external dissemination, documentary plays an indispensable role in propaganda and cultural dissemination to outside world. However, by the research of the data, the writer has realized that the popular documentary of China failing to shoulder the task of external transmission. Currently, under the tide of pursuing marketization, the majority of Chinese documentary overly emphasizes historic significance and humanity of documentary and attaches importance to commercialization and entertainment part, but loses the epochal character and significance of the Chinese documentary. Therefore, they no longer have the nature of recording facts and news, gradually digressing from the original attribute of the documentary.This paper take A Year in Tibet as the case study, by analysis A Year in Tibet in terms of the structure、content、story、plot、character、editing rhythm、lens motion and frame, to discuss the importance of The story of China to the exploration of developing orientation of Chinese documentary from the perspective of documentary.On the basis of case study, the writer puts forwards the idea that the developing direction of Chinese documentary in the future should be:to make the real side of China as the eternal theme of documentary; to pursue and explore the system of domestic and foreign cooperation; to enhance the localization of documentary in provincial television station; to take the road of documentary film industrialization and the road of director stylization and the audience of different levels.
