Chi Zi-jian, dubbed as “Daughter of Polar”, keeps attentive eyes to home land and water, folktradition, daily life of folk people. In a specific style and personal charm, she describes people’s joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure, and pursues the truth, virtue and beauty of personality; meanwhile, she reveals alsothe dark side–the ugliness of personality, and irrationality in society and complex interpersonal relations.Chi Zi-jian’s description of human’s existence and emotions, indistinctly or distinctly, reflects theExistentialism. This thesis attempts to interpret Chi Zi-jian’s novel from the perspective of Existentialism, brings into light of the hidden feature of existentialism inside the novels, and indicates the difference ortranscendence of her creative thought over Existentialism. The Introduction of this thesis starts with the works of Chi Zi-jian and introduces the topic ofExistentialism, reviews the current status of research into Chi Zi-jian, and indicates the significance ofinterpreting Chi Zi-jian from the perspective of Existentialism.
