Advice to Young Men is our team’s translation task, which is a part of translation projectof Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and which has been finished cooperativelyby our seven team members. The translator is in charge of two parts:Introduction and Letter IITo a Young Men, which covers about twelve thousand words all together. The original prosewas finished in1829. The original author, William Cobbett, is a famous British proser, therepresentative of petty bourgeoisie. With simple and sharp language style, the original textcontains lots of polysemous words and complex long sentences, which adds the difficulty totranslator’s translation, and challenges translator’s Chinese presentation skill. In order to finishour task perfectly, the translator and team members make a well preparation before translating,which includes of data collection, the research of the original author and his works, translationof proper nouns and analysis of readers. The translator chooses "faithfulness andexpressiveness "as the criterion to guide the process of translation. In the translation of words,the translator analyzes the relationship between polysemous words and context. In thetranslation of long sentences, the translator chooses the traditional methods. After finished thistranslation task, the translator deeply believes that translation is a kind of creative,tough andcomplex work. To be a qualified translator is by no means an easy job, it needscomprehensive quality and a sense of responsibility.
