American Pastoral, I married a Communist, and The Human Stain are calledThe American Trilogy. At the end of the twentieth century, Philip Roth, a well-knownAmerican-Jewish writer, published the three works in succession, which reveal theAmerican dream of American Jews in several generations, using the technique of newrealism. By the method of text analysis and the angle of psychology, this thesisanalyzes an integrity process of the American dream from pursuit to ruination step bystep. The thesis consists of three parts, the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.The introduction briefly presents Philip Roth and his works, summarizes thedomestic survey in recent years and the weak point of the research. There are threechapters of the text. The first chapter illustrates the sprouting of Americandream—desire, the literature origin of desire, and the conflict between desire andsocial and historical background. The second chapter analyzes during the process ofdesire pursuit, the hero’s identities lead to a variety of crisis, combining otherness,alienation, and reconstruction to analyze. The third chapter elaborates betrayalthrough Jewish motifs: betrayal and generation gap, which results in shattered dreamsconsequently.The conclusion which sums up the study of The American Trilogy is beneficialto learn about the survival of Jews in America, and the value of contemporaryAmerican society and culture, and further understand the process and psychology ofthe realization of American dream.This thesis breaks the single research pattern on certain theme or technique. Itanalyzes the chasing process of American dream comprehensively combining boththemes and techniques, taking this process as a whole to set forth one by one, whichmakes sense on individual’s psychology against history context.
