A mercy is Tony Morrison’s latest novel, which tells the story of people wholive or work in a farm in Virginia in the final decade of the seventeenth century whenthe conflation of race and slavery was in its infancy.This paper is using the image schema theory of Lakoff&Johson’s, and isenlightened by cognitive poetics, cognitive narrative and cognitive linguistics, withthe purpose that the image schema theory can be used in a lager literary sense.Through the analysis of the forming, transforming, and projection of different imageschemas in the novel, the characters’ psychological features and behavior areportrayed, as well as the uniqueness and inspiring artistic features of the novel. Thegoal is to prove the feasibility of using image schema theory to analyze a novel, and tobroaden the study of A mercy.
