Among the native writers of Anhui Province in new era, Pan Jun is the one who has become famous from his early years with a high reputation and a strong influence nationwide. During the late1980s and early1990s, his enthusiastic research and attempt on the issues regarding "How to Write" helped the writers of Anhui Province find their leading position among the literary vanguards. At the turn of the new century, his novella "Chongtong" once again had the republic of letters regard Anhui writers with special esteem. He has sojourned outside his native province for years in a way of independent conduct and decent character. Most of his works are characterized by strong individual shade and style. Critics usually classified him into the line of vanguard writers with his vanguard characters mainly reflected in his pursuit of "Meaningful Form" in his works, that is, according to his own judgment, he has been constantly engaged in audacious and active research in narrative artistic form and expression for his novels. As a writer, he tried to reveal the human conscience and the humanistic concern through his works. By making use of his rich imagination and consummate skills, he elaborately enchanted readers into a rich and colorful mind world. The train of research thought was established in the preface of this paper by starting with probing into Pan Jun’s unique personal experience and personality in his writing conception. By carrying out the staged research on his writing conception and his novella level in last30years, the purpose of the paper is mainly to discuss narrative characteristics and artistic innovation in his various abundant literatures after those literatures being summed up and induced.Chapter one is about the stage of his doing exercise in composition. On this part, the author of this paper discourses upon the beginning stage of Pan Jun’s writing. The main artistic value of Pan Jun’s works during this stage reflected in the motif of his writings, yet there were some shortcomings too, for example, the stereotype, the singleness of the structure linearity and the rigid endings, etc. It is delightful to see that Pan Jun had applied such expression techniques as the stream of consciousness, dialogue and the second person of narrating in his writings on purpose during this stage, which laid the solid foundation for his writing afterwards.Chapter two is about the stage of his artistic consciousness. Under the influence of various domestic and foreign literature thoughts, he paid great attention to the vanguard experimental literature during this stage. In a sense of his writing perception, he had gradually achieved the transformation from reflecting reality with traditional realism to approaching to existence with modernism during the process of seeking the meaningful form.Chapter three is about his maturation stage. After returning from the commercial sea, he obtained plenty of inspiration and abundant materials and went deep into cognition of the humanity and feeling. It could be said that his rich life experience brought him strong impetus to recognize the world, describe the world and create his own art world. By doing so, he got rid of the extreme experiment of vanguard narrative game. His work has become more readable since then, while the formal meaning and the inherent significance value were not impaired. His personalized interpretation and construction of the history are his contribution to Chinese contemporary literature.Chapter four is about his wandering stage. Since he put most of his energy on drama, movie and television, step by step, his writing passion decreased during this stage. The characteristics of his works were not as distinctive and attractive as before. Besides, the elements of scholasticism and perfunctoriness obviously increased. His writing level subsided when compared with those during his second and third stage. Even for a writer with a wide range of interests and once taking the writing as part of his life, whether he can come back to the literary world will be questionable in the future.Pan Jun’s works are fraught with both modernistic exploratory and rebellious spirit and classical romantic and nostalgic feelings. His unique personality and enduring nomadic lifestyle caused him eager to evade from the existing order and to realize his pursuit of the meaningful form with radical or even rebel stance. Nevertheless, he is a successful writer so long as he sent out his accepted voices in his peak time.
