Logotherapy In The Context Of Chinese Culture:from Theory To Application

Logotherapy which is based on psychoanalysis and individual psychology emphasizeshuman existencial meanings as well as search for the meaning and focuses on individualstrying to achieve the meaning of life. Compared with the empirical psychology, Logotherapy,with strategies to interpreting stressed human conditions, foregrounds the awareness ofhumane care and highlights the meaning of life and value pursuit, and it is found in a betterposition to deal with such practical life issues such as basic needs, individual competition,human nature and social atmosphere.Such strong humanistic features which Logotherapy boasts of can be found in traditionalChinese culture.Being mainly composed of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, traditionalChinese culture stresses spiritual pursuit no less than practical issues in life, and the valuepursuit can be found in the aspects of "filial piety","face" and "love and marriage" and so on.The study sows that facing the current rapid development of commodity economy Chinese,experience work and survival pressure and feel the existential emptiness due to the dispears oflife value and meaning and hence suffer the torment of psychological problems and mentalillnesses as loneliness, despair, emptiness, anxiety and depression.Accordingly, this research deals with Logotherapy in the context of Chinese culture andinvestigates both the theoretical framework and practical application of Logotherapy.This paper introduces the necessity, method and significance of this research and givesdefinitions of pertinent terms before presenting the development background of Logotherapyand the researches in China, Japan, Europe and US. While introducing the core theory andtechniques of Logotherapy, the paper, with the purpose of presenting a systematic view ofLogotherapy, elucidates the related basic arguments, proposals, treatment techniques andoperation procedures.Than this paper deals with the development of Logotherapy with particular interests inthe fields of theory and practice in counseling and psychotherapy, and expounds on the ideasin Chinese culture which respond to Logotherapy and investigates the possibilities ofdeveloping Logotherapy in Chinese culture.Finally this paper deals with application of Logotherapy in Chinese culture. In this part,this paper scrutinizes Logotherapy in the aspects of filial piety, face, love and marriage and sex with the consideration of counseling and psychotherapy practice, and further, investigatesLogotherapy in Chinese culture with case studies.
