Having integrated the features of ethnic culture and regional culture of Linxia, this studychiefly reports and systematically discusses the artistic achievement of Linxia brick carving:its origin and historical change, its artistic traits and manufacturing technology. Withexcavation and clearing, field investigation and literature research,an in-depth study intoculture value, artistic characteristics and engraving skills of Linxia brick carving haseffectively employed an integration of research methods both from image morphology anddocumentics, namely, a combination of the functions of signs and symbols and relevantliterature review.Linxia brick carving, as the folk artistic forms, chiefly practiced and produced byMuslim of the Hui, demonstrates multicultural inter-reflection through its liguistic encodingsystem, as a result of which, an growing integration of Islamic culture traits and the cultureand ideas of Confucianism has clearly been represented. This research therefore sets out toevaluate and analyse such cross-cultural ecoding merchanism with borrowing somearguments from image morphology,so that the necessity of studying into Linxia brickcarving and its workmanship would have been stressed. Two research concerns have beenillustrate: first, a reflection of the influence from Islamic culture and aesthetic value uponLinxia brick carving;and then a study and analysis of the influence from Han culture ofliterati and its mass traditions. In terms of protecting national folk culture and succeeding tothe chinese national spirits, this paper is going to analyze production technology, and artisticaccomplishments of Linxia brick carving, and then conclude characteristics of its language ofconstruction, and finally put forward an integrated research method of aesthetic quality andcultural worth. As for a commercial society with so-called image consumption, traditional brick carvingskills have increasingly been draining away, due to great influence from modern evaluationof artistic moulding, aesthetical interests, and workmanship. With study into samples oftraditional brick carving art, this research has made an effort to re-evaluate its cultural traitsas a combination of formal language and natural language, thus context analysis applied, and a sound knowledge developed.
