William Shakespeare is a talented poet and dramatist. He created many characters that are full of passion or have strong desire for power to display the pain and frustration of real human nature, and which deeply shows the emotional needs and survival predicament of human being in the real world. While Shakespeare and his works are always popular in the domestic and foreign researchers, and the studies are mainly focused on the tragicomedies which are familiar to readers. As for Anthony and Cleopatra, the domestic researches are mainly focused on the three themes of Binary opposition, intention and psychological analysis of the characters.In order to grasp the connotation of Shakespeare’s works, the author of this thesis reads the complete works of Shakespeare. After close reading Anthony and Cleopatra, and comments of this tragedy, the author tries to explain and analysis the human nature and reason of the characters. During the process, we can understand the real world and see the romantic and tragic beauty of Shakespeare’s works. Through a step by step analysis, we can see Shakespeare’s acquiescence of the immoral love in Anthony and Cleopatra, which is different from other tragedies. Furthermore, Cleopatra has so many defects, who’s not so perfect and fascinating like other tragic heroines. However, Anthony and Cleopatra is also real and charming, like other tragedies, it shows human nature and reason, life and death, the sublime and the tragic. This thesis will explore the complicated rational consciousness of people under love, experience the truth of human nature in the confusion and the end of life, and feel the artistic beauty of the tragedy. It can not only help us to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses, but also make us a deep understanding of life to complete our spiritual purification.
