An Analysis Of The Phenomenon Of Intercultural Miscommunication In Guasha

With the development of world political and economic integration,the world today is characterized by an ever-growing number of contacts resulting in communications between people with different languages and cultural background. Sometimes these differences become barriers in the process of communication, and even sometimes result in tragedy.Intercultural miscommunication is a very common phenomenon in intercultural communication between different people from different countries. Many factors can result in this phenomenon, such as linguistic factors, pragmatic factors, social and cultural factors, etc. This paper defines intercultural miscommunication, and explores the cultural difference factors leading to intercultural miscommunication:such as religion, history and customs. The main cultural causes for intercultural miscommunication, which can be summarized as:(1) world view (2) value orientation (3) different thinking patterns. The present thesis will be divided into five chapters.Chapter one introduces the subject of the study, gives a brief review of the theories,such as culture, interculture communication, intercultural miscommunication and the the causes leading to intercultural miscommunication. Chapter two presents the literature review of cultural and intercultural communication as well as intercultural miscommunication.Chapter three analyzes the phenomena of the intercultural miscommunication reflected in Guasha. Chapter four gives suggestions on how to avoid intercultural miscommunication. Chaper five is the conclusion which summarizes the whole paper, presents its implications for intercultural miscommunication, and its limitations and expectations for future improvement in the future.Through contrastive analysis and detailed discussion, this study has proved that cultural differences between Chinese culture and American culture affect in many aspects.If we pay attention to the important reasons that lead to intercultural miscommunication, we can avoid the occurrence of intercultural miscommunication in communicating with foreigners and reach the goal of successful communication. Studying intercultural miscommunication has an important guiding significance for human communication.
