As a part of the English language, idioms are not only the essenceformed after a long period of repeated use, but also contain richcultural information. Because of their opaque meaning and fixedstructures, learners always have trouble in comprehending andmastering them. Therefore, domestic and foreign researchers havebeen researching them for years to deal with the problem. One of theissues they address is the relationship between idioms acquisition andimprovement of intercultural communicative competence. However,most of our Chinese scholars fail to pay due attention to the relationship.This thesis focuses on the idiom teaching to Business English students inthe higher vocational schools. It attempts to identify the existingproblems and to explore the possible solution, hoping to attract theattention of teachers and help them teach English idioms.Based on a cross-cultural perspective and the relationship betweenlanguage and culture, this thesis conducts both theoretical andempirical studies to investigate the problem. Firstly it describes theimportance of cross-cultural communication competence to BusinessEnglish students, and the role of idioms in intercultural communication.Secondly, it discusses the significance of idiom teaching in thecurriculum. Thirdly, it proposes some suggestions for teachers andstudents.Research results show that cultural input gains more and moreattention in English teaching, and students nowadays have morechances to engage in intercultural communication. Throughsystematical teaching of English idioms, students’ language ability andcross-cultural communication competence can be significantlyimproved.
