A Study On Shen Xidi’s Viola Teaching

Shen Xidi is a famous viola educator and player in China. In her viola performing and teaching for forty years, she attended many important performances, She also took part in the international musical-cultural exchanges actively, She was often invited as judge in some contests. Besides organizing summer camps and holding viola master-classes, Shen Xidi has educated many wonderful musicians. In her years of teaching, Shen Xidi has made great achievement in musical theory, she published teaching materials, composed professional papers, participated in the composition and performance of 《Haigang》 which is Piano and String Quintets,recorded discs. She has made great contribution for the construction of viola major in Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the viola development in China.Through years of teaching practice and theoretical study, Shen Xidi generally formed a teaching system which is advanced, practical and scientific, distinctive as well. The thesis takes Shen Xidi’s viola teaching system as the object of study and explores Prof. Shen’s teaching art from the following aspects, such as teaching thought, teaching characteristics, teaching and performing method, teaching achievements and her suggestions for viola teaching. Six chapters consist of the whole thesis. The first chapter introduces Prof. Shen Xidi’s life and study history. The second and third ones analyze Prof. Shen’s teaching ideas, traits and characters, which tries to give a comprehensive statement of Prof. Shen’s teaching system. The forth chapter states Shen’s ideas on some hot topics. The last two chapters conclude Prof. Shen’s teaching results, artistic achievements and her contribution for viola career.The domestic and overseas studies on the subject are quite limited. The materials from the Internet and magazines only concern the general evaluation and document of some concerts. As for Prof. Shen’s systematic teaching thoughts, teaching methods and playing skills, there is no research at all. Thus this thesis offers valuable references to viola players and educators, furthermore, the studies will fill the aeancv of Chinese viola education theorv and glorify Prof. Shen Xidi’s teaching arts This is in accordance with her lifelong education aim,"try to popularize the niche art-viola."...
