In the modern history of literature, Xiao Hong is a unique female writer. Her art world is in a class by itself. She used female’s unique perspective observing the world, and is good at presenting the living status and sensibility of people in the northeast China with realistic exquisite brush works. The research on Xiao Hong mainly focuses on her two master novels, The Field of Life and Death and The Biography of Hulan River, less on later important work Ma Bole. It is regretful that ignore her later consideration in creation, life and society. According to the analysis of the front, this paper mainly interpret the thought and artistic value of Ma Bole from Xiao Hong’s criticism of national soul, further discusses Xiao Hong’s inheritance and innovation of Lu Xun’s transferring national soul, and reveals her later writing ethic. This includes four parts following.First part is mainly about Xiao Hong’s inheritance of Lu Xun’s thinking and writing. She bears with Lu Xun’s responsibility of "transferring national soul", she also makes profound revelations and reflections on Lu Xun’s "national character’ issues. However, during the process of learning from Lu Xun, Xiao Hong has her own exploration and creation. Lu Xun’s focus is on Chinese inferiority which was developed through thousands of years of feudal society, while Xiao Hong gives more emphasis to new culture revolution not being completed, which is where Ma Bole reveals its specialness.Second part discusses Xiao Hong’s revelation of Ma Bole’s national characters. She realizes that Chinese people are lack of independent thinking, and respect of reality and accuracy. They are selfish, and like to achieve satisfaction though the process of insulting others. These are all parts of the inferiorities formed through years. In Ma Bole, Xiao Hong uses ironic style to establish a small character with good education. She jokes with the character’s behavior and thinking and reveals the whole society’s meaningless of escaping life.The third part discusses Xiao Hong’s efforts to reveal the reason of national characters. Xiao Hong looks at history from both horizontal and vertical perspectives. Chinese attitude of self-centered, governor’s policy of weakening people and failed family education are reasons why Chinese are lack of independent characters. After the war with Japan, terrible living environments make this inferiority grow even faster.The fourth part analyzes Xiao Hong’s way of building characters from the perspective of arts. At the same time, it indicates that Xiao Hong was hoping the Chinese could awake eventually.The fifth part summarizes the Xiao Hong with Ma Bole, a book on the thought and artistic achievements, she inherited Lu Xun’s spirit and the reconstruction of national spirit has its own innovative exploration, successfully created the character Ma Bole.
