This thesis is based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially on the grammatical metaphor theory. Since there are not many studies about Chinese and Japanese before, it also used the English reference materials which have been widely discussed by linguistics previously. During the study, Transformation of Words, Rank-shift and Japanese custom expressions have been focused on. After the comparison between Chinese and Japanese, it has drawn the conclusions which conclude the suggestions to Halliday"s grammatical metaphor theory, and the summary about the differences and similarities between the two languages. This article is made up from five sections. In section1, the main previous studies on grammatical metaphor have been introduced. It also has stated the main foundation on which this thesis has been laid and the main methods which the study has used. Section2has compared the situations about the transformation of words between Chinese and Japanese, especially the non-transformation change of the characteristics. Rank-shift has been discussed in Section3. It concludes Japanese’"koto",’"no" and "toiu" expressions, and Chinese "clause", and the terminologies which have the similar properties in both languages. Section4is mainly about Japanese custom expressions which has shown the metaphorical characteristics, and to which the similar expressions are not found in Chinese. Conclusions have been given in Section5. One part is the suggestions to "congruence" which has been mentioned by Halliday to discuss the essence of grammatical metaphor. The other is about the differences and similarities which have been drawn from the comparative study.
