Pucheng Zhao’s Woodcut New Year Paintings Case Analysis

According to Shaanxi province’s geographic location and geological structure, Shaanxiprovince includes three areas, that is Guanzhong, Southern Shaanxi and Northern Shaanxi.And under the influence of Guanzhong and Southern Shaanxi’s local popular culture, thereproduced all kinds of woodcut New Year Paintings in West Fengxiang, East Pucheng andHanzhong city, which retained the tradition and formed the new characteristics. The writervisited the descendants of Zhao’s woodcut New Year Paintings in East Pucheng, combinedthe historical records and field investigation, and then described its origin in detail. Next,from the aspect of Zhao’s production process and its existing category, including thepaintings of Fengxiang and Hanzhong city, the writer comparatively analyzed their picturesand usage in folk, also compared the style of art on the paintings of these three areas, andgeographical features and regional advantage in East Pucheng. Finally, the writer summarizedthe prosperous reason of Zhao’s woodcut New Year Paintings, which have developed foralmost one hundred year. This paper also analyses folk characteristics, usage on holidays andsacrifices, and differences between “great tradition” and “small tradition” of ancient China inEast Pucheng. At last, it concludes the main basis of life in ancient China is “small tradition”.So, there are folks as long as there is public, and there exists “small tradition” as long as thereare folks, then there is folk art as long as there is “small tradition”. Therefore, according tothe present situation of folk Woodcut New Year paintings and its integrity, the significance ofits existence is obvious that this paper research Zhao’s New Year paintings.
