The Impact Of Extracurricular Activities Organized By Students On Their Achievements In Foreign Language Learning

In the reform of foreign language education, extracurricular activities gain lots of attention by more and more researchers and teachers. So far, most related studies merely focus on extracurricular activities organized by teachers. There is a lack of research on extracurricular activities organized by students themselves. Based on constructivist learning theories, this paper studies the types, characteristics and the impact of extracurricular activities organized by students on their achievements. It provides some suggestions on how to guide students to develop these activities.There are two research methods employed in this study:questionnaire survey and documentary research. A questionnaire survey is conducted with210junior students in Hainan University Tourism College to investigate their participation in extracurricular activities organized by students. Students’examination records are studied to know the changes in their achievements in foreign language learning. The impact on students’achievements is examined by analyzing the correlation between students’learning achievements and their participation in these activities.The findings show that extracurricular activities organized by students have positive impact on students’achievements of College English/Japanese and CET/JLPT examination results. Finally, the author reveals the importance of extracurricular activities organized by students and provides suggestions on how to guide students to develop it in the future.
