In ordinary and normal life, he painted a far-reaching, both obscure and open painting in his unique way, which is an integration of memory and observation. He explored a different way of art in a philosophical way, which inspires the audience. This paper, as a re-thinking case of the significance of narrative painters of the early20th century modernism, provides a brand new and different critical view to Bonnard.Regarding to Bonnard’s late works, this article has been divided into five chapters step by step:Chapter one is focused on the unique way in which Bonnard observed things. Taking existing objects as starting point, his vision changed with flow of change of his objects. Thus, this chapter emphasizes on the interference of the existing of the objects and his weakness in acquiring first impression. Based on Chapter One, Chapter Two focuses on:How Bonnard overcame his feeling weakness by memorizing his first impression through quick sketch. Discuss how he turned sketches into paintings by continuous recalling. Try to find the characteristics of continuous painting behind his unique views. On the basis of Chapter One and Chapter Two, Chapter Three analyzes obscure and open characteristics of Bonnard’s paintings. By the magic of structure, color and light, he provides readers a direct impression. From readers’view, Chapter four adopts analysis comments. By distraction of attention, extension and question of seeing, readers can thoroughly grasp the characteristics of Bonner’s late works, thus understand Bonner’s works essentially. On foundation of previous chapters, Chapter Five tries to find something deeper behind visual effects to redefine historical status of Bonner and explore values of his late works to modern art. Differences between Bonner and Impressionists’ observing ways, connections between he and modernism artists such as Cezanne. Matisse and Picasso, and associations between he and Expressionism, Abstract Expression and Surrealism will be discussed.Bonnard in his late period is a profoundly radical painter. He developed into the combination of memory and peripheral visual effects. The hint of instability, existence and disappearance of the world in his late works is everywhere, which enables us to actively feel the unspeakable effect of feeling and memories which Bonnaed created. He has redefined seeing, which make we obtain more things, his image reflected on the existence development attitude. His late works challenge our eyes, our patience and even our understanding of history of modernism. Only when art historians adopt more modernist perspectives to review and examine the body of Bonner’s works, Bonner’s critical status and recognition will be upgraded.
