Uyghur language and English belong to different kinds of languages’classification. Uyghur language belongs to agglutinative language and Englishbelongs to inflecting language. It seems they are not comparable from the angle oflingual types. However, these two languages both express the concept of “tense” bymorphological change of verbs. This provides the possibility of comparing these twolanguages.First of all, I will start with the definition of the concept of Uyghur tense andEnglish tense, their grammatical features, theoretical basis, and then comparativelyanalyze their similarity and otherness. In the end, I will sum up and make aconclusion which will be drawn based on the comparative study. During this process Iwill make the full use of the research achievements which were done by others. Themain method will be comparing and enumerating16verb tenses of English’scorresponding forms according to Uyghur’s nine verb tenses and then comparing andenumerating nine verb tenses of Uyghur’s corresponding forms according to English’s16verb tenses. As to the students whose mother language is Uyghur, it is not difficult to use theconcept of tense in Uyghur. But when learning English, they will feel confused evenscared facing16verb tenses of English. In fact, the concept of tense in Uyghur is farmore complicated than English. Nowadays, more and more foreigners come toXinjiang to learn Uyghur. While they are learning, they will also come across thesame difficulties about verb tenses in Uyghur. Therefore, I will study systematicallyand list the tenses in Uyghur and English, try to find out the corresponding points. The main purpose of this paper is to help both English and Uyghur language learners, especially the Uyghur language learners, to help them fully understand and learn theverb tenses in Uyghur by comparing these two languages’ verb tenses. And I alsohope my paper has some research value in a way.
