A Study On The Historiography Of Xie Guozhen

Xie Guozhen (1901-1982) was a famous Ming and Qing historian, version bibliographer, epigraphy, and bibliophile. He had rigorous scholarship and deep attainments in the History of the Ming history, Qing history and version bibliography. Especially the more prominent achievements in the field of Ming Qingshi study, his writing were fruitful. He left more than ten academic works, Large number of papers, reading notes and his compilation of historical data Repertoire. They are the precious heritage of the contemporary Ming and Qing historical research.Taking Xie’s life, academic activities and the analysis of his representative works as the main line and combining with the developing trend and characteristics of Modern Chinese historiography, this thesis presents an objective and comprehensive inquiry into his academic achievement in the studying of Ming and Qing history, especially the latter. On the basis of understanding Xie’s academic contributions in a realistic way, a systematic elucidation and summary of Xie’s original historical views and thoughts, as well as his methods and characteristics, will be given in this thesis in order to reveal his specificity and fixate his status and influences in Modern Chinese historiography, thus providing useful lessons and enlightenment for the contemporary academic research.This thesis consists of three chapters and a conclusion. Chapter one opens out Xie Guozhen’s life and his researches on historiography and discusses how the education, growth environment and his experience in politics influence his following academic life. Chapter two demonstrates Xie Guozhen’s groundbreaking contributions to the study of the Ming and the Qing history, especially about Party social movement and Study style of movement. Chapter three discusses Xie’s achievements of the science of historical data and Version Bibliography. The conclusion summarizes and evaluates his achievements in the studying of Ming and Qing history.
