After thirty-year rapid development, Chinese development zones have promoted the progress of social economy and made great contribution to the urban construction in China. As the number of development zones increases and traffic network system and information technology are perfected continuously, all kinds of development zones have changed into new pattern depending on significant economy core or regional agglomeration development from alone and scattered layout so that the network system of development zones, which has close relationship of social economy with each other, has been formed. The development of Chinese development zones has entered a new stage where groups coordinate for comprehensive development rather than simply individual development. From the perspective of groups, this thesis introduces the theory of ecological evolution into geography, puts forward the process of ecological evolution for development zones, analyzes the characteristics of each evolutionary stage and summarizes significant influencing factor during the evolutionary process. Based on the said, it constructs the model of ecological evolution for developments to analyze and evaluate the status of evolution and development of cites or regional development zones and quantitatively estimate the developmental stage of the development zones, which has great theoretical and practical significance.Based on industry cluster theory, the theory of spatial division of labor and regional cooperation theory and guided by the theory of ecological evolution, this thesis adopts data of social economy and materials of field researches consults Life Cycle Theory of ecological evolution to classify the evolutionary process of development zones into basic stages and analyze their features with the help of GIS software and SPSS. Besides, it summarizes influencing factors during the process of the evolution and takes the development zones in Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration as a case to construct logistic curve model, estimate their evolutionary stage and evaluate their evolutionary characteristics. Research results are shown as follows:(1) The development zones is the phenomenon that a number of development zones which reply on a city or an area gather in a certain place by industry relation and region correlation to form lasting competitive edge. Four basic features used to judge the existence of development zones involve complexity, convenient traffic contact, relevance of industrial chain and the existence of core development zones.(2) On the basis of industry cluster theory and the theory of ecological evolution, the evolutionary process of development zones is divided into four stages:emergence, self-increase, space expansion and integration. The difference among the characteristics of each stage lies in overall strength, enterprise scale, industrial specialty and social economical relation of development zones. In macroscopic view, influencing factors on the evolution of development zones include the following:policies and economy are basic factors, the scale of groups and relation between regions are important factors, and innovation ability and industry strength are key factors. All kinds of influencing factors interact with each other deciding the types and time history for the evolutionary process of development zones.(3) Based on population growth-curve of ecology theory, logistic curve mode of development zones is constructed. According to the empirical study on development zones in Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration, it is found that, as the development zones in Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration expand continuously, they are in the stage of self-increase now. Thus, according to their current characteristics, strategies are proposed to optimize the development zones and improve their overall strength.
