Virginia Woolf’s The Waves is considered as a highly experimental, poetic works. There is an interlude which is full of poetic language andmusical rhythm leading every chapter. This novel begins with the wavesand ends with the waves also, just like symphony. This thesis analyses the relationship of Virginia Woolf and theBloomsbury Group, poetic language, musical rhythm and thecombination of these artistic skills. Virginia Woolf’s parents think highly oftheir children’s education, which gives her a firm basis of literature. Later, her close relationship with the members of the Bloomsbury Group bringsher sparks of inspiration. There are six characters in The Waves, in whichthree are male and another three are female. Some critics thought thatthese six characters represent six aspects of Woolf. Although The Wavesis a novel, there isn’t a traditional plot in it, but six characters’ interiormonologue. Virginia Woolf tries to scratch the essence of life. The creativeness of this thesis lies in that this is the first thesis ofmaster degree in China to explore the combination of the musicalrhythm and poetic language.
