France writer Victor Hugo’s novel Notre Dame de Paris and Korean writer Na Do Hyang’s short story the Mute expressed the highest expression of love, that is beyond lust, love and desire, by the description of hero’s ugly appearance but kind heart. The ugly positive characters were willing to devote everything to the beautiful women, even their lives. They chose to commit suicide for ending their young lives or lose their lives for saving the women who were in the trouble. On the contrary, the negative characters in the two works chose to destroy the women if they cannot get them.When the novel Notre Dame de Paris and the Mute published, the social repercussions were considerable. Most of the researches were limited in social and historical area, especially the research of for the Notre Dame de Paris; most researches generally compared beauty and ugliness. Therefore, this paper will be based on previous research and use Freudianism to analysis reasons of sacrificing of two men who have no emotional communication with the two women. Ultimately explain reasons of the two men showed the love for the women without thinking about their lives. This paper will also use methods of parallel research and effect research to prove that Korean author Na Do Hyang not only follows the traditional creative mode of literary rules, but also accepts France writer Hugo’s influence. What’s more, there is no breakthrough in the literature and writing of Na Do Hyang’s work.This thesis has five parts. The first part is introduction, focused on clarifying the relevant research, purpose and significance of the dissertation and thesis research contents and methods. The second part explains libido process of two positive characters’oppression, projection and sublimation when they got along with the women. The third part explains the reasons of the negative character’s despicable acts when repression failed and then they showed the destructive instinct or just stay in the ego phase when they got along with the women. The fourth part illustrates that Na Do Hyang draw the experience of Victor Hugo and influenced by French romantic literary when she created the Mute. The last part is conclusion, using Freud’s theory to conclude the reasons of positive and negative character’s different behaviors and the Victor Hugo’s influence on Na Do Hyang.
