| The technological development in photography and typography allows the wider propagative horizon of journalism by the means of documentary photography. The "Young Companion" pictorial focusing on current news, which is integratedly endowed with all the features of news, entertainment and knowledge, has improved and completed the reportage model in which images and words are combined together. The documentary photography plays an important role in this mode of transmission basing on visual communication, and prospers itself in pictorials. This thesis tries to demonstrate the inevitability of the development of the transitional mode by defining documentary photography and its humanistic characteristics, studying on the development of the pictorials in modem times and analyzing the strategies of Young Companion’s establishment and edit. At the same time, this pictorial has recorded the activities of the photography association, introduced the famous photographers and their works, and discussed about photographic theories and skills, which all directly promotes the development of the documentary photography and reflected the developmental situation of the documentary photography in the Republic of China. Furthermore, the Young Companion photographic tour’s activities and the publications are the forms of successful practice of the documentary photography and give the expression to the historical significance of the documentary photography in the Republic of China. |
