The70s of the last century witted the rapid development of both linguistics andliterary criticism. The lately introduction of Reader-Oriented Theory put forward thedevelopment of many interdisciplinaries, such as Literary Pragmatics (LP). LiteraryPragmatics explores the dynamic relation among author, work and audience from thepragmatic perspective. And its essence obtained by literary pragmaticians emphasizesthat the process of writing and that of reading could be perceived as the conversationbetween writer and audience. In such a conversation, on the one hand, work acts as anaccess that enables author to convey his or her intention and minds to audience; on theother hand, readers would analyze the text and infer the hidden information of authoras what the audience always does in daily conversation. By this way, readers couldhave a reflection on the social reality and make recreation of work. LiteraryPragmatics is an effective tool to do the discourse analysis. It will testify and verify itseffectiveness in text interpretation. And the most excellent quality is that LiteraryPragmatics will directly or indirectly reveal the theme of work from macro and microperspectives. However, even nowadays, especially in China, Literary Pragmatics isrelatively strange to many scholars. For this reason, this thesis commits itself to applyLiterary Pragmatics to conduct analysis by Relevance Theory which could be one ofthe effective methodologies of Literary Pragmatics in Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows. At the same time, this thesis would also provide audience hard evidence thatin addition to the ability of interpreting the utterances, of revealing the theme of thewhole work, of helping audience have a deeper understanding on the literature.Audience will recreate interpretation when they analyze the turn-taking and knowauthor’s experience. Appreciating literature can be viewed as a dynamic relationamong author, work and audience. As the craze of Harry Potter series is sweeping the world, J.K. Rowling hasbecome one of the most popular novelists in the world. Rowling tells the magic storylasting for7years and uses abundant conversations to depict characters and weaveplots to attract audience. The study will choose the final book which could be themost attractive in the whole series and apply Literary Pragmatics to interpret the turn-takings of key characters and prologue to present the technique used by authorand her understanding of the world. The micro interpretation of literature helpsaudience get a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic relation among author, audience and work. As the progress of analyzing turn-takings and prologue, theunderstanding of the theme---the universal love which must be invisible isomnipotent---can be realized. To sum up, through the analysis both from the macro and micro perspectives, thisthesis shows that Literary Pragmatics is effective to interpret utterances and text, andwhat is more important is that it aims to dynamically reveal the theme of the literarywork. In addition, this discussion also displays J. K. Rowling’s language art and hervalue of life.
