In recent years, linguists put forward “lexical chunks” after quantities ofresearch and consider language is mainly comprised of lexical chunks. Lexical chunksreflect the interaction of semantics, syntax and pragmatics. Lexical chunks supportdevelopment of grammatical rules and achieve the idiomaticity and appropriacy ofexpressions. With lexical chunks as the core and cognitive psychology as thefoundation, lexical approach combines constructive approach and communicativeapproach–not only put emphasis on grammatical rules but also focus on the usage inauthentic context.This research aims to testify the effectiveness of lexical chunks in CET4writing.The research questions are listed below:1) Whether the college students’ writing proficiency in CET4can be improved afterapplying the lexical approach in teaching?2) What is the frequency sequence of four-type lexical chunks applied in CET4writing and which type of lexical chunk is applied with the highest frequency?3) What is the frequency sequence of four-type lexical chunks applied in CET4writing and which type of lexical chunk is applied with the highest frequency afterapplying the lexical approach in teaching?In order to answer the questions above, the author adopts quantitative analysis.Two classes are selected to be the control group (CG) and experiment group (EG)respectively which have similar English proficiency. The whole experiment lasts twomonths and falls into four phases which are pre-test, mid test, mid-test, and post-test.Each phase lasts two weeks and each test includes one CET4writing. After theexperiment, SPSS software is adopted to analyze the writing score and numbers offour-type lexical chunks in CG and EG separately. Then T-test is applied to deal withthe data. The answers to the questions are as follows:1. Lexical approach can indeed improve CET4writing proficiency.2. The frequency sequence of the four-type lexical chunks are: Poly words, Phrasal constraints, Sentence builders, Institutionalized expressions;poly words have the highest frequency.3. The frequency sequence of the four-type lexical chunks after applying lexicalapproach is: Poly words, Sentence builders, Phrasal constraints, Institutionalizedexpressions. Poly words have the highest frequency.In short, lexical approach can improve CET4writing proficiency, and polywords have the highest frequency.
