Tea is the traditional bulk commodity in modern China. During the late19thcenturyand the early20thcentury, Chinese tea industry has almost lost its monopoly position in theinternational market, going through the transmutation process from brilliance to downfall.The decline of Chinese tea trade has a great influence upon the Chinese society. From theview of pricing power, the thesis has explored the decline of Chinese tea trade in theinternational market through the theoretical and empirical analysis, and the reasons behindit. This paper consists of four chapters.In the first chapter, the author has expounded upon the significance of this thesis, theresearch history of this task home and abroad and its status quo, the methodology and thesource of the data.In chapter two, the author has explained the ups and downs of Chinese tea trade inmodern China and particularly the fact that in that period Chinese tea has experienced thedecline in export volume and international market share. This chapter has laid thefoundation for further discussion.Chapter three is the key to this thesis. Through the statistical analysis of historicalmaterials and data, the author points out that the lack of pricing power is the root cause ofChinese tea trade decline. The lack of pricing power has affected the Chinese tea trade inan extremely negative way.In Chapter4through the analysis the author finds out the reasons that has caused thelack of pricing power in Chinese tea trade, namely the industrial structure lagged behind,backward financial markets and the industry organizations and the government haveperformed poorly.At last, we can draw a lesson from the above-mentioned analysis that we should strivefor a voice in the international market so as to safeguard China’s economic security andinterests.
