Charles William Morris is one of the important in the mid-20th century, therepresentative of American pragmatism. He combined pragmatism and logicalpositivism which were popular in the United States in the20th century, to developinto a theory of "scientific empiricism". And inherited Peirce semiotics, and GeorgeMead’s social behaviorism, combined to form his own signs theory. In his later years,Morris worked on attaching the sign study to the value of university cooperation onthe basis of his sign theory; further improve his sign theory Discipline System. Thetheory of sign, especially divided the semiotics to three part—syntactics, pragmatics,semantics, widely accepted by Western linguists. In addition, as a philosopher,Morris also have a deep thinking to human problems and social problems,contemporary American social problems raised by the "open self" and "open society"theory in Western society has a certain influence. This paper tries to research Morris’ssemiotics and aesthetics for more comprehensive and systematic analysis. TheIntroduction section explains the broad and significance of Morris SemioticAesthetics. Then, to further explain the aesthetics of semiotic thought from the fiveaspects, as follows:The first part of the paper is the theoretical basis of Morris’s Semiotics andAesthetics. Basic on Morris’s life experiences and works, from three aspects--semiotics, the theory of social behavior and scientific empiricism, to trace theorigins of the Morris philosophy and semiotics, combing the context of the semioticdevelopment of aesthetic thought.The second part is Morris’s semiotics basic theory. As a symbol of Morris’s maincontent, this part we explore the Morris semiotics thought on his sign theory and valuetheory.The third part is Morris semiotics that under the guidance of literary and artistic andaesthetic. These parts basic on Morris’s papers that have been reflect the aesthetic andart. Explore the concept of the art in the ideological system of Morris Semiotic Aesthetics.The fourth part is the semiotic theory under the guidance of Morris’s human andsocial studies. In1948, Morris published the book <The open self>, which on "openself "and" open society "theory in Western society had a definite impact. This bookhas a wealth of Cultural Aesthetics, which support the theory of Morris and societyare all imbued with semiotic aesthetic theory point of view.The fifth part focuses on Morris’s semiotics theoretical and practical significanceof aesthetics. Morris’s semiotic theory is so important to the establishment anddevelopment of Western semiotics disciplinary system. This chapter, learn theaesthetic thinking of practical significance to the symbol of Morris summary. Thefocus of discourse Morris refers to the sign theory of the linguistic turn of the20thcentury humanities and cultural studies which turned to wave guidance and referenceto the value of literary aesthetics.At last, described the reference of the Morris Semiotic Aesthetics ofcontemporary aesthetics and literary studies.
