Analysis On Roger Ames And Henry Rosemont’s Translation Of The Analects From Philosophical Perspective

In recent decades, researches on The Analects have been in the ascendant.However, most of these researches are focusing on the level of comparisons betweendifferent versions of translation. These comparisons are done by applying differenttranslation theories and selecting different translators’ versions. There arecomparatively rare researches on the analysis of translators’ translation actions fromthe philosophical perspective.This thesis is going to analyze Roger Ames and Henry Rosemont’s translationof The Analects of Confucius from the philosophical perspective, to explain thetranslators’ translation action from philosophical perspective. This research is going tosolve two major questions, and the first one is the unique distinctions of Ames andRosemont’s version compared with other versions; the second one is reasons whythere are those differences.In the beginning, the author makes a simple summary of the researches on thetranslation of The Analects. Up to now, researches on the translation of The Analectsmainly fall into three major parts, researches on the target texts, researches on thetranslators and researches on the prefaces. Among all these researches, studies on thetarget texts are mostly conducted on the comparisons between different versions. Thenthe author introduces Roger Ames and Henry Rosemont and the already existedresearches on their translation of The Analects. The author finds out that researches ontheir translated version can be mainly divided into two aspects, they are target textscomparison and their translation of the core culture-loaded terms. The author thenanalyzes the unique translation strategies and the linguistic features of their version, andit is found that the translators have adopted foreignization and thick translation in their translation. As to the linguistic aspect, the translators have used a lot of gerund structureand perfect tense. The author then explains the translators’ action from the philosophicalperspective. The author believes that the reason why the translators choose the thicktranslation strategy is influenced by their own philosophical translation ideas. Thedecentralism translation view thinks that people should establish a new research modecalled “Chinese-centralism” when translating Chinese philosophical works. As a result,they integrated their interpretation on the eventness of literary Chinese language and theassociation between language and mind into their translation.In the end, the author finds that the translators’ requirement on translation is thatthe delivering of ideology and language should be both emphasized on the preconditionthat the original ideas are delivered. And they also require combining translation withideology closely to fulfill the final purpose of translating philosophical works.
