A Study On Quit Xue Yi Yan From The Perspective Of Brazilian Cannibalism

Yan Fu is a renowned translator, translation theorist and enlightenment thinker ofmodern China. Hu Shi praised him as “the first one to introduce the western learning”.The previous studies are focused on his translation criterion “Xin, Da, Ya” and his rep-resentative work Tianyan Lun. Besides “Xin, Da, Ya”, other issues concerning Yan’stranslation practice, such as the impact of his culture views and the social backgroundon his translation, have got less attention of researchers. In addition, there are fewtranslation studies on Qun Xue Yi Yan, one of the most famous representative translationworks of Yan Fu. The majority of studies on Qun Xue Yi Yan have been conducted fromthe aspect of the history and the culture. Therefore, it is significant to make a throughstudy on Qun Xue Yi Yan to explore the causes of Yan’s manipulation and rewriting ofthe source text by making the comparison and contrast between the source text and thetarget text.Inspired by the Brazilian Cannibalism translation, the author aims to interpretQun Xue Yi Yan within the context of Chinese postcolonial situation. Through the analy-sis of Yan’s translation cultural view, the historical-social background and the manipu-lative rewriting, the author tries to prove that Yan’s translation coincides with Cannibal-ist translation. Three key questions need to be solved in this dissertation: what are thecauses and features of Yan’s Cannibalist translation? What is the difference betweenYan’s Cannibalist translation and Brazilian Cannibalism translation?First, the author makes a brief introduction of the origin and the traditions of Bra-zilian Cannibalism translation and summarizes its translation strategies and practice.Cannibalism translation adopts the metaphor of “devouring” and “nourishment” in or-der to liberate the source text and refuse the western cultural hegemony. Their purposeis to stress the identity and cultural traditions of the Third World.Secondly, the author analyses the causes of Yan’s Cannibalist translation. Hiseast-west-mixed translation cultural views allow him to accept the western thoughtsmore easily. The utilitarian factors of Yan’s translation values require his translation tomeet the demands of the target context. Considering the semi-feudal and semi-colonynature of the society, Yan’s translation is the production of the combination of the eastand the west.Thirdly, the author analyzes the Cannibalist features of Qun Xue Yi Yan. On theaspect of the translator’s positioning, Yan’s choice of the source text and his translationnorms are both consistent with Cannibalist translation, that is, choosing the source text of the superior culture and abandoning the absolute faithfulness. What’s more, theDazhi strategy and rebellious translation are similar to the Cannibalist translation,“de-vouring” and “blood-transfusion.” Both Yan Fu and Cannibalist translation adopt thedomestication strategy. Hence, Yan used the strategy of addition, deletion, rewriting,annotation and substitution to rectify the form and the content of the source text in acannibalist way.Finally, through the contrast and comparison, the author finds out that the differ-ences between Yan’ Cannibalist translation and Brazilian Cannibalism translation arethe degrees of radicalness and the motivations. On the one hand, Brazilian Cannibalisttranslators prompt the hybrid target text by “devouring” the source text with emphasison diversity. Thus, Qun Xue Yi Yan is more faithful compared to Cannibalist translation.On the other hand, the motivation of Brazilian Cannibalism translation is to recreate itscultural identity while Yan’s motivation is to introduce the advanced western learning toreach the goal of saving the nation.This dissertation deepens the understanding of and the research on Qun Xue YiYan to some extents and offers an illustration of Brazilian Cannibalism translationwithin the Chinese context. It is meaningful to the studies on the development of soci-ology in China, too...
