A Study Of Li Guanglu’s Sheng Performance And The Characteristics Of His Products

Li Guanglu is a professor and master instructor in the China Conservatory, an actor ofnational class A, and a famous educator, performer, composer and music activist of Sheng incontemporary China. He has outstanding achievements on the performance, education,development and transmission of Sheng. Therefore, the studies and discussions on Li’s art areof great significance for the development and transmission of Sheng.Li Guanglu was born in HeNan province which is famous for its various types of opera.So he suffered the edification of folk music and derived rich nutrition form folk music, whichlaid the foundation for his performance and composition of Sheng in the future. In1975hewas admitted by the Music College affiliated Middle School of China Central Wuqi ArtUniversity, and began his professional learning process of Sheng. Based on the generalintroduction of Li’s artistic achievements at the stages of professional study, Sheng art troupesand Sheng teaching, this thesis explores the characteristics and styles of Sheng’ performanceand composition with the purpose of giving directions for the majority of Sheng’ learners inthe learning process in future.In the thesis, three research methods are employed: Interview, Instruction and AnalysisMethod. In the process of Sheng’ performance, Li has his unique methods of using flexiblebreath, controlling the strength of air up and down, playing fast and clear double exhale andtapping tone skillful, which making him very mastery at all sorts of high demand playingskills. In his creations, the use of various techniques and multiple performance contentsmakes each works be more characteristic of Sheng.Li Guanglu devotes himself to Sheng art heartedly. He makes perfection more perfect inplaying Sheng, and explores the education and works of Sheng art. His teaching syle andrigorous spirit have changed the developmental history of Sheng art. Therefore, the name “LiGuanglu” and “Sheng” with three thousand years of history, are written into our nationalmusical history together. Li’s devoting spirit of Sheng art inspires us to make efforts tocontribute to the development of Sheng art.
