Compliment as an important polite speech, for all kinds of language, culture,with daily activities in speech communication plays an important role in, reflect andreflected certain social values and cultural statute. Under the different culturebackgrounds, different people use compliment expression in a different way, in allaspects of the difference of both parties in communication easy to cause themisunderstanding. Therefore, in the intercultural communication, generousrespectable compliment and its response to play the role of lubricants, to establish,maintain and strengthen harmonious interpersonal relationship, making the praise thepraise and the better for emotional communication, thereby communicate favorably,to achieve the expected purpose communication.Since the1970s, more and more attention of scholars in polite phenomenon, it isregarded as a linguistics, social linguistics, anthropology, linguistics, pragmaticsresearch subjects such as an important content. Among them, Brown and Levinsonface theory and the most outstanding Leech politeness principle. And Chinesescholars also in the basis of former politeness principle of modified and added.Different culture background for polite to the evaluation standard is different, so can’tderivative a culture of the politeness principle to measure the words of another cultureaction is appropriate, and should see the essence from phenomenon, dig out the deeproots, realize the integration of the between different cultures.This thesis on the cross-cultural communication science, speech act theory andpoliteness principle as the main theory, with English and Chinese compliment as themain research object, on the study of comparison and analysis method, the concreteobject, the paper explores compliment frequency, topic, the function, the response,and other aspects of the differences, and from the perspective of cross-culturalcommunication under probes into Chinese compliments caused the roots of differentlanguage. Understand the words of praise this cultural differences act to help reduceand avoid cross-cultural communication can be misunderstandings, embarrassed or confused situation.
