As one of the most influential playwright in American theoretical world, EugeneO’Neill led this old form of art into the era of modern drama by producing a greatnumber of realistic, expressionistic and symbolic works, converting commercial dramainto serious literature in America.O’Neill’s influence also went beyond the borders as he was initially introducedto literary world in China as early as1920s. Yet his popularity rose and fell indifferent periods as a result of the change of ideology, patronage and poetics.The paper consists of five chapters. Chapter One is the literature review ofstudies on Eugene O’Neill’s plays from1920s until recent period. Chapter Twomainly discuss about the manipulation school and how three factors interplay witheach other. Chapter Three gives three brief bio of Eugene O’Neill, his achievementand his lasting influence. Chapter Four mainly elaborates translation of EugeneO’Neill’s works in China in three periods and explain the difference on theperspective of manipulation school. Chapter Five makes comparative studies on oneof Eugene O’Neill’s plays, Beyond the Horizon through the analysis of socialbackground language habit, styles of translators.
