Engaging in innovating and writing various novels and theories withcomplicated narrative approaches to explore the infinite possibilities ofthe art of fiction, Italo Calvino joins the literary world of20th century tobecome one of the internationally nonignorable authors who has madefar-reaching influences on Western world and even the the entire globe. InIf on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, one of his groping achievements, we aretreated to a distinguishing feature of postmodernism for which thisdissertation will be mainly apt to seek by the aid of close-reading. Fivechapters are included: the introduction will briefly summarize researchstatus of Calvino’s novel, especially If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler;chapter1will discuss postmodern narrative codes used in his writing infour aspects——his particular lexical units, highlighted semantic fields,sentence structure and text structure; chapter2will probe into hislabyrinthic consciousness, labyrinthic structure, order in disorder andzero-time narrative; chapter3will concentrate on intertextuality in his writing, diving into two parts——parody and fake, counterfeit andplagiarism; and chapter4will demonstrate on the problem of “who areyou?” aroused by the second-person narrative, and then analyzes thetussling for authority between the author and the reader.
