Stefan Zweig(1881-1912), the distinguished Austrian Jewish writer, embarked on his literary career from writing poetry and then perforrmed a remarkable work of literary translation, biography writing drama writingand novel writing. Though he did not leave too many novelles, he was among the most translated writers and he did deeply impress his art originality and resonant humanitarian spirit on us. Maxim Gorky considered him "the world-known first-class artist".The first-world war smashed the basis of his living. His soul was severelly wrecked by Nazi’s antisemitic atrocity. With the mind experience undergoing a vast change, his writing also verified. Unlike the modernism prevalant in the20th century, his works are tinted with intense psychplogical description and exquisite characterization. He favored such dramatic plots as people behaved at the hand of their unconsciousness and their bizzare fervor with the result that they often brought about insane acts, which invokes us the affection to read. One of his popular novels, Letter from An Unknown Woman is representative of this.Considering the previous studies have been made on the narrative structure, narrative perspective or narrative strategies. But never before has anyone evaluated the novel from the point of view of the tension narration. I hereby make great efforts to remedy the defect of narratology analysis. This dissertation will analyze from the angle of tension narration the novel in the following chapters:Chapter one gives a detailed introduction of Zweig and his works as well as the research status of his works and comments from the literature critics on his works. Chapter two focused on the froming of his narration point with the analysis on his writing. Chapter three expounds the manifestations of tension narration in the novel and chapter four the significance of the tension narration in the novel. The conclusion part approves the immense achievements of Zweig as a master in psycho-realism and summarizes the crucial role of tension narration in Letter from An Unknown Woman. My dissertation will be devoted to this themes as what the manifestations of the tensions are shown in this novel and how they push the plots foward.
