This paper attempts to explore Tess’s tragedy from the following aspects. Based on the analysis of the age of Tess and the social situation, We must be clear that it is the poor family, false morals, religions and other social factors that mainly cause Tess’s tragedy. As for personal factors, the weaknesses of Tess’s character are the direct reason that causes her tragedy. Tess has fatal weaknesses:hare-brained and yielding. While there are many worthy qualities people should respect. However, all these noble spirits turn out to be the accomplice who results in her miserable fate. Alec and Clare are two important men in Tess’s life. Alec is rich but bossy, just wants to occupy Tess. Clare is the representative of the bourgeois intellectuals, but he can’t get rid of the old moral values, eventually abandons Tess. Tess’s parents cannot understand Tess. Instead, they put the heavy family burdens on her shoulders, pushing her towards despair.Tess’s tragedy also embodies Hardy’s strong fatalism view. Large numbers of coincidences and accidents are to illustrate the inevitable tragedy. Tess’s tragedy also suggests personal factors, the compositions containing history karma. As stated above, this thesis respectively gives a comprehensive, multi-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis on the basis of the social reasons, personal factors and fatalism view. This is not only a new interpretation of the whole novel but also a more comprehensive, deeper analysis of the core of the novel.
