Whether in the research of Buddhism or painting, Fahai Temple Fresco has high research value. Fahai Temple remains intact and looks magnificent at present, which follows the painting technique of Tang and Song dynasty, traditional Chinese realistic painting, embossed and gold foil painting, shows a perfect painting technique of Ming dynasty. From the precious material and exquisite technique of painting, Fahai Temple Fresco shows a luxury royal quality and the skill of the painters’ technique. Dunhuang Fresco belongs to freehand brush work, and the pigment is relative thicker, with less painting times. In the way of painting, Dunhuang Fresco usually Fu Gou Ti Xian (which means draw the whole picture by heavy ink, and then draw the detail by colored pigment for many times to cover the original ink lines, and then draw the outline by ink again to stress the structure). Yongle Temple Fresco is in a different style, which the outlines are not covered by colored pigment, but relative independent. Compared with these two methods, Fahai Temple Fresco is closer to traditional Chinese realistic painting Heavy, which draws the outlines first, and then uses the way of shading and rendering by both transparent color and mineral powder. Gold as a kind of material appears here in all its methods in fresco, like gold foil painting、outline in gold and so on. Besides, the use of mica is perfect too, so Fahai Temple Fresco is very resplendent and magnificent. From the painting style, Fahai Temple Fresco is closer to scroll painting. This dissertation begins with the history of Fahai Temple, the key point studies on the painting style of its fresco, like the structure, color, and the lines. The secondary side is to explore what affect the style of Fahai Temple Fresco, which contains four parts: inheritance of the painting style of Tang and Song dynasty; the combination of Han and Tibetan; relations with the royal families; and the analysis on the painter of the fresco. In this dissertation, I study Fahai Temple Fresco by comparing with Dunhuang and Yongle Temple Fresco, and expect to comb the painting style of Fahai Temple Fresco.
