Toni Morrison(,1931-)is a female African American writer. In1993, She won the NobelPrize for literature.In1970, after her first work The Bluest Eyes was published, she won awidespread praise from readers and media, which laid her position of Observer of SocialLiterature of Contemporary African American. Nowadays, almost all the nations in the worldattaches much importance to the heritage and utilization of their national culture, and as oneof the nations, whose ancestors creat the abundant and brilliant African Culture, AfricanAmerican formed their own tradition of their national culture. However, under the dominationof western centrism, the nation and their culture are in a marginalized condition in a longperiod in the history. Everywhere in her works, the essence of African culture is the mainbody of her writing, and her strong sense of racial makes her paid much attention to the realityand future of African American nation. In the song of Solomon, Morrison show the traditionof African American culture, the spirit of collectivism and the ideology of Harmony betweenhuman beings and nature. And this work is the pinnacle of her concern of fate of AfricanAmerican and her spiritual recourse, which are followed with interest and beloved by manyreaders and researchers.This thesis is composed of three parts: introduction, text, and conclusion.The introduction deals with the position of Toni Morrison in the history of literature andreviewed the research profile of researchers at home and abroad, and shows the achievementand the inadequacies in the current research. These researches mainly focus on the theme ofreturn, the narrative skill, the feature of language and the theory of Modernism and so on.However, the essence of the tradition of African American is not explored and analyzed fromthe beginning to end, and this thesis will interpret the tradition of African American culture inthe song of Solomon under a multicultural profound.The text consists three chapters:The first chapter mainly discusses the relationship of the reality of Americanmulticultural and the Cultural Dialogue, and analyses the position of African culture in theAmerican multicultural. Combined the analysis of the different cultural choice of African American under theprofound of multicultural, the second chapter discusses the three types of cultural choice, thatis, the recognition of the culture of white people by the African bourgeois, the exclusion ofthe culture of white people by the African Nationalists and the heritage of the African cultureby the African cultural leader and explorers.The third chapter elaborates the cultural stance,location and choice of Morrison. Basedon her own racial and sexual feature, Morrison managed to hold her own cultural stance andcultural choice, starting from her African and female character but not limited by it. What sheapproved is that African American could inherit the essence of the tradition of Africannational culture, that is the spirit of collectivism and the ideology of Harmony between humanbeings and nature.The value of the work is shown in the conclusion part. As an African American writer,Morrison was always thinking about the position of the African American culture andrecognized the challenge of a new generation of African American under a profound ofmulticultural with her great forward-looking. If the Africans want to integrate into theAmerican society better, if they don’t want to be tormented and troubled by the dual cultureand if they want to find the real self, they should recognized themselves, and understand theessence of the African national culture deeply, and further more, return to their owntraditional culture. But they should not be limited by the African culture. The national featureand American modern society should be combined better. So, in the American multiculturalsociety, the new generation of African American will face more challenge and at the sametime, they will get more achievement.
